Leonie and David look on as Alfred blows out the single candle on his cake - it seems that the other sixty were not necessary. The birthday ceremony was far lower key than last year, but our friends made it very special. Leonie baked a delicious cake and the members of the House ensured that everything went smoothly.

Get Back

After a long time in South Africa we have finally made it home. It is so good to be back!

This month we have the following:
1. The Journey
The story of our trip home, including a stop for dentistry.

2. Ludhiana
We love dentistry!

3. Joyful Reunions
A taste of the folks that we met again.

4. Family News
The family continue being a blessing.

5. Photos
See our world.

6. Praise Reports & 7. Prayer Requests
We appreciate your prayers

1. The Journey

We said goodbye to Leonie's mother at a ridiculous hour in the morning of the 27th of February, Duncan, Desiree's kind husband, took us to the airport. Along the way, Leonie remembered that she had left her medication behind. Duncan cheerfully turned around. Praise the Lord - Leonie really needs her medicine!

The three flights to Delhi (Cape Town - Johannesburg - Doha - Delhi) were uneventful, except that we weren't able to get much sleep. Leonie's back held up beautifully.

The fun started when arrived in Delhi early on the 28th. A taxi driver picked us up there. Exhausted, we piled into the car that was due to take us to Ludhiana, a trip that is supposed to be 5½ hours. We fell asleep, trusting that all was well. Leonie noticed that every now and then the driver made mysterious stops where he would have a brief discussion with a shady-looking carrier, hand over a small parcel and then leave.

Alfred woke up after two hours and checked the GPS - we were still in Delhi! Alfred then patiently explained that we had not made progress and that we should start heading for Ludhiana. As communication was a barrier, we called our friend Pappu. The driver explained that he had gotten lost due to some major protests that were happening and so he had asked for directions. This was almost plausible,

The driver then announced that he was hungry and that he was taking a break for breakfast. We patiently waited for him.

When the driver emerged from the dhaba after breakfast, Alfred followed the journey closely on his phone. At first, the driver was on the direct road, although it seemed slightly slower than the highway. Just as we reached the main road to Ludhiana, the driver veered off in completely the wrong direction.

Alfred blasted the driver with the demand to immediately take us to Ludhiana in words that would be understandable in any language.

Suddenly the driver had a revelation of how to go to Ludhiana. He made a U-turn and for the next half an hour drove perfectly.

We were both exhausted and fell asleep. When we woke up, we discovered that the driver had decided to go off the main road and was travelling towards Ludhiana via back roads. There was nothing that we could do about it as the driver drove like a maniac through narrow, bumpy roads and past quaint Indian villages, horn honking terrible threats and in general being dangerous to all, cows, pedestrians, cyclists, cars and tractors alike. Sleep was now impossible and a mild terror set in, as we careened to our destination.

After what seemed like an eternity, we arrived in Ludhiana, 8½ hours after departing from Delhi.

2. Ludhiana

We have been to Ludhiana twice before and stayed at the Dental College's guest room each time. This time the guest room was in use, so we went to the guest house they recommended. We took one look and declined the room. The place was clean enough and slightly larger than the guest room at the Dental College. The problem was that there was not a single window. It had the feeling of a prison cell.

Doctor Abi, the head of the Dental College, immediately rushed to our aid and took us to  another guest house. This one belonged to the Kalavari Church. We were very happy there.

The next day (Saturday), we met Dr Kevin. He got Leonie started on her Root Canal Treatment. He told Alfred that he intended to give him crowns for his lower front teeth that were purely for looks. Alfred gently explained that he would win no beauty competitions with the crowns or without them, and that they were therefore unnecessary.

Dr Kevin then started the process for Alfred's dentures. Alfred accepted this in the same way that he had accepted a bowl of spinach in his youth - it was apparently needful but gave little prospect of giving actual joy.

During our time in Ludhiana, we had many great visits with our Irish friends David and Janet. Dr George (the registrar of the Christian Medical College) and his wife went out of their way to make us at home. We also made firm friends with the sweet people in their church. We felt like VIPs.

By Tuesday, all the preparations were complete and we had to wait. Leonie's crown was fitted on Friday and Alfred's dentures found their home on Saturday. The final bill for all the work stunned us  - we had expected to pay a fraction of what it would cost in South Africa, but we paid much less even than that.

So on Monday 10 March we started out on the last leg of our journey. Alfred was once again very grateful for the bracelet Nancy and Adrian had given him for motion sickness - it worked beautifully as we zipped around the tight corners and bounced along the bumpy roads.

And late in the afternoon we were home in McLeod Ganj - oh joy!

So much has happened it the months we have been away. We arrived to a house full of energy, joy, and many visitors.
It is hard to keep track of all the visitors. At one point we had three groups visiting us! Our worship services are joyful celebrations. There are groups in the prayer room, going on prayer walks, playing in the Kids’ club and having cups of tea and coffee.

3. Joyful Reunions

We have had a wonderful time meeting our friends. We have had visits with our Christian friends and enjoyed listening about the things that they have been doing.

Dhondup and his family had a point of pain - they were forced to move, and searched all over McLeod Ganj. They despaired of finding a place, but found an apartment close by. They will be moving in on Sunday, but it is small and they need something for the longer term for them and their three children.

As Alfred walked the streets, people were happy to greet him. He was concerned that his Tibetan would have been very rusty, but has was able to make good conversations with everyone - Tibetans, Muslims, Sikhs and locals.

The meetings with Timothy were especially happy, as he expressed how much he appreciated his times with Alfred. He loves talking about Jesus - it gives him great joy.

4. Family News

Kids’ Club resumed after the Tibetan New Year, with close on twenty children attending. On Wednesday there were so many volunteers that Achui had to ask some to leave. We received new games, toys and a box of much appreciated Lego. Thank you!

One 5-year-old boy came to Achui and asked if Jesus answers prayer. Teremi said yes he does. The boy then asked if they could pray that he would find the right Lego piece for the model he was building.

Together the boy prayed and put his faith in Jesus. Then he went looking and found a piece that met his high specifications. He gave the glory to God. These children are experiencing the love and power of Jesus at first hand.

The Upper Room House of Prayer has been busy too.

Morning worship used to be for half an hour on weekdays. On our return we learnt that we now spend an hour worshipping and praying together. Our most important work happens in the prayer room!

Last Friday we had a night of prayer and worship, finishing at 5AM! The team is going on a prayer journey to Ladakh in April. They will be visiting Moravian churches where they will lead times of worship and prayer. To prepare, there will be eight days of fasting and prayer from 31 March to 7 April. You are invited to sign up for one day. The theme is “Re-igniting the Moravian Revival”. Once you have signed up, you will receive the prayer points. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1--dHxg-212uuMnzhN4xnlxG1AxUg5dFb/edit?usp=drivesdk&ouid=113276234116880318424&rtpof=true&sd=true

5. Photos

The building next to us has always been a depressing place. The roof was an eyesore. The people that stayed there kept to their rooms and we hardly ever saw them.

The building was repossessed several times as each new owner struggled to make the place work. This happened once again but this time the new owner has made an impact. He fixed up the rooms - work continued for months. The place is now open for guests, and there is a lively atmosphere.

The crowning achievement is that he has transformed the roof into a pretty venue, and guests come upstairs to enjoy the little structure that he has made.

This has created some problems for Sarah and Bill who live upstairs and who were the ones who had the dubious benefit of their late night music. This seems to have been toned down a bit lately, perhaps in response to requests from the neighbours.

We do wish our neighbour well in his new enterprise.
If it's March, then it's time for cricket! Boys come from all over McLeod Ganj to to play on the terraces next to our house.

We see this everywhere - the cold is past, and everyone can come outside to enjoy the Spring air.

6. Praise Reports

  • We had safe travels - the Lord kept us safe all the way.
  • Leonie's back has improved to the point that she can be up and about for up to 2 hours at a time. Her back did not give inordinate problems during all the long hours on the journey from Cape Town to McLeod Ganj.
  • Our dental work is now complete - the dentists were amazing in all their work and we are very grateful.

7. Prayer Requests

  • We believe that Leonie's complete healing is near. Let's pray for the final healing touch!
  • Please pray for Dhondup and his family that they will soon find a new apartment that is big enough, cheap enough and close enough to the places that they must go.
  • Please keep praying for our finances.

What is a Frontier People Group?

A Frontier People Group (FPG) is an Unreached People Group (UPG) with virtually no followers of Jesus and no known movements, still needing pioneer cross-cultural workers. Joshua Project approximates FPGs as 0.1% or fewer Christian Adherents and no confirmed, sustained movements to Jesus.
